I have no pictures

I really don’t. Every day this week (not true, because I was away for two of them, but anyway..) I have been trying to get some good pictures of something sewing related.

But no luck.. It’s so dark all the time. Even today, when I spend all day at the computer, I checked from time to time to see how the lighting was. No luck.

So I have no new pictures. I can’t show you how to pin fit your trousers properly. I can’t make my new header (need some artistic needle and thread works – and am not  prepared to pay for it from a photo bank, yet…) and I can’t show you the piles of fleece in lovely spring colours (because I live in a place where summer and fleece fabric actually goes together, you know) I’m using for samples for my classes that are starting next week.

I’m also working on some new designs – both for the pattern line and for other uses (so here it would be nice with pictures of my pencils, my lousy sketches and maybe a blurry pic of the design wall with spring coloured fabric) – and then there is all the end-of-year tax work. Balancing the books, labelling all the little pieces of paper, printing whatever has been kept online (so stupid that I have to print it) and placing of everything in binders.

And that’s pretty much what I did this week…. How was your week?

P.S. I just realized – I need to blog about how my taking the Seamless Pledge is working out.
I have now been banned (by myself) from buying RTW clothes, bags and shoes for two months. It’s still going great. I have been tempted by shoes, but have not bought them. I made my Christmas Dress and wore my drape tops for any other holiday parties and didn’t need anything else.
I have a bit of a challenge for January though, as I am going to be Sofie’s godmother and carry her at the baptism, and I need to work out an outfit for that. Am thinking about making the “leather” pencil skirt I’ve been talking about and pairing it with a light coloured drape top (maybe w sleeves) and heeled boots… Opinions?

We interrupt this program… A Catching Up Post

:-) Just a bunch of small admin notes….

 1. I’ve revised the schedule for the trouser fit-n-sew-along. Are anyone following along? Are you getting work done on your trousers? Tell me about it!

2. It has been a month since I took the Seamless Pledge. No problems – I’m doing fine (but might have been shopping more fabric). I needed a party/going out top, and made one. Then needed a winter dress and made one. No problem. Pictures soon.

{The winter dress I made. It’s a deep teal stretch velour and trimmed with silver fold over elastic at neckline and sleeve edges.}

3. Days are short here. I am coping by….. No. Who am I kidding. I hate the darkness this time of year. It’s dark from 3pm to 8.30 am right now and I have very little energy. I am dealing with it by lighting candles all the time and am eating way too many Pebbernødder. And not running at all. There is snow, people, and it’s pitch black most of the time. (Bad excuse. I should just get out there the little time when it’s not dark)! Also darkness makes it difficult getting pictures.

4. On the lighter side, we have a new episode of the podcast out. Do you listen? Is my English (even more) horrible when spoken?

5. New pattern coming out soon. If you liked the Kimono Tee, you are going to love this one! That’s all I’m saying right now:-) Pattern is drafted, graded, instructions written. Just need those photos! Hoping for photo weather this week-end!

SEWING ALL THE THINGS (and not buying any..)

I mentioned before that I have been thinking about joining the growing movement of pledgers, pledging to not buy any clothing for a period of time.

This self-employing thing is not really giving me that much spending money, and in light of the recent discussions about the real cost of fast RTW (ready To Wear) clothing and my wish to live more green – I already buy ecological food and also have my ecological kitchen garden and the chickens – it makes sense to stop for a moment and think.

Even though I have been sewing for a long time, I have also been happy to shop the high street stores such as H&M for a lot of items. Partly because my weight has been fluctuating and I didn’t want to spend time sewing something that wouldn’t fit me for long, partly because it’s so easy and also kind of fun to spend an afternoon shopping and trying on clothing with my sister.

{Take off the dust covers – I’m going to sew up a storm (Ha – In reality the covers have not been on the machines since I took this photo. I don’t really now where they are..}

But now I have stabilized my weight in a place I’m happy with, I am making patterns for everyday wear, and it makes a lot of sense for me to actually sew the stuff I need for my wardrobe.

So here we go:

The Seamless Pledge

I, Maria of MariaDenmark: Wool & Weeds, am taking the seamless pledge for one year until November 1st 2013. In this time, I will not buy any new clothes except underwear, tights and socks. Instead I will sew or knit all my clothes or buy from second hand stores and flea markets. This also includes shoes and boots and purses and bags. The only exception is during my vacation in Bali in April. I will do a special blog post at the end of each month, to keep a record of how I’m doing.

As I mentioned in the podcast, I need a new pair of blue skinny jeans, and I have purchased those last week – I don’t have time to sew them right now, so this is okay. But starting right now: no buying clothes for me!
